Preface

Teaching is not only the act of delivering lessons. It is also the art of observing learners, understanding their difficulties, questioning one’s own methods, and trying better ways to improve classroom practice. Every teacher faces problems in the classroom, such as poor participation, irregular homework, weak reading ability, low achievement, lack of confidence, discipline issues, or difficulty in understanding concepts. These problems are not merely obstacles; they are opportunities for thoughtful professional growth.

Action Research begins from this very point. It helps teachers study their own classroom problems in a systematic and practical way. It does not take research away from the classroom. Rather, it brings research directly into the classroom, where real teaching and learning take place. Through Action Research, a teacher becomes not only a transmitter of knowledge but also a reflective practitioner who observes, plans, acts, studies evidence, and improves practice.

This book, Essentials Of Educational Research, has been prepared with the purpose of helping student-teachers, teacher-educators, research scholars, and practising teachers understand the concept and process of Action Research in a clear and simple manner. The language of the book has been kept direct, student-friendly, and easy to understand. The aim is not to make research appear difficult, but to show that classroom-based research can be meaningful, manageable, and useful for every sincere teacher.

The book explains the meaning, nature, scope, importance, procedure, tools, techniques, data collection methods, analysis, interpretation, report writing, and practical application of Action Research. Special attention has been given to the needs of B.Ed and M.Ed students, who often require guidance in selecting a problem, preparing objectives, forming an action hypothesis, designing an intervention, collecting evidence, and writing the final project report.

Throughout the book, effort has been made to connect theoretical understanding with classroom reality. The examples and explanations are drawn from common school situations so that readers can easily relate the content to actual teaching-learning experiences. The book also emphasizes that Action Research is not meant only for solving problems, but also for developing a habit of reflection, self-evaluation, and continuous improvement.

I hope this book will serve as a useful guide for students and teachers who wish to understand and conduct Action Research with confidence. If it helps even a few teachers look at classroom problems with greater patience, clarity, and hope, the purpose of writing this book will be fulfilled.
