Preface
Electrical circuit analysis is the foundation on which every branch of electrical engineering is built. Power systems, electrical machines, power electronics, control systems, communication circuits, instrumentation and digital electronics all rely on the same small set of laws and techniques: Ohm’s law, Kirchhoff’s laws, systematic nodal and mesh analysis, network theorems, transient analysis, the Laplace transform and two-port models. A student who masters these ideas can analyse almost any linear circuit with confidence.
This book follows the syllabus of the course Electrical Circuit Analysis is organised into six units:
| Unit | Chapters | Topics | Hours |
| 1 | 1–5 | Circuit elements, linear/non-linear, active/passive, unilateral/bilateral devices, energy sources, source transformation, dependent sources, phasors, node and mesh analysis, duality and dual networks | 5 |
| 2 | 6–7 | Superposition, Thevenin, Norton, maximum power transfer, reciprocity, compensation, Millman, Tellegen and substitution theorems | 8 |
| 3 | 8–10 | Initial and final conditions; first- and second-order RL, RC and RLC circuits; forced and free response; time constants; transient and steady state | 8 |
| 4 | 11–13 | Laplace transform, transformed networks with initial conditions, transfer functions, poles and zeros, series and parallel resonance | 8 |
| 5 | 14 | Two-port networks: Z, Y, ABCD and h parameters, conversions and interconnections | 7 |
| 6 | 15 | Network graphs: trees, incidence, tie-set and cut-set matrices and their applications | 6 |
Each chapter follows the same pattern: learning objectives; concept development in simple language; clear circuit diagrams; many solved examples, graded from simple to examination level; key points for revision; additional solved problems; and exercises in three parts — multiple-choice questions with answers, short-answer questions, and long-answer/numerical problems with answers. Chapter 3 provides a concise review of sinusoidal steady-state (phasor) analysis, because the network theorems, resonance and two-port networks are applied to both DC and AC circuits.
At the end of the book are a laboratory manual of twelve experiments, a formula sheet, a question bank with model university question papers, short questions with answers for viva and two-mark preparation, solutions to selected problems, a mathematical review of complex numbers, determinants and partial fractions, a guide to circuit simulation with SPICE and MATLAB, a glossary and a list of references.
Suggestions from teachers and students for improving the book are always welcome.
