Preface

The book Basic Electrical Engineering is designed as a foundational text for students embarking on their journey into the field of electrical and electronics engineering. The primary objective of this book is to present the fundamental concepts in a clear, systematic, and application-oriented manner so that learners can build a strong conceptual base as well as develop problem-solving skills.

The contents of this book are carefully organized into six comprehensive units, each addressing a key area of electrical engineering. Unit 1 introduces the fundamentals of DC circuit analysis and network theorems, including essential laws such as Kirchhoff’s laws, and powerful techniques like Thevenin’s and Norton’s theorems. These concepts form the backbone for analyzing electrical networks. Unit 2 focuses on magnetic circuits, providing insights into magnetic behavior, losses, and their analogy with electrical circuits, which is crucial for understanding electrical machines.

Unit 3 deals with the steady-state analysis of single-phase AC circuits, emphasizing waveform analysis, phasor representation, power concepts, and resonance. Unit 4 extends these ideas to three-phase systems, highlighting their practical importance in power systems, along with connections and power measurement techniques. Unit 5 introduces electrical machines, including DC machines, transformers, and three-phase induction motors, explaining their principles, construction, and operation in a simplified manner. Finally, Unit 6 provides practical knowledge of soldering and wiring techniques, enabling students to gain hands-on skills essential for real-world applications.

Special emphasis has been placed on including simple numerical problems in each unit to enhance analytical thinking and reinforce theoretical concepts. The language used is kept simple and precise to ensure accessibility for beginners, while still maintaining technical accuracy.

This book aims to serve as a valuable resource for undergraduate students, diploma holders, and anyone interested in understanding the basics of electrical engineering. It is hoped that this text will not only help students succeed academically but also inspire them to explore the vast and evolving field of electrical engineering with confidence and curiosity.
