Preface

Data Structures & Algorithms is a fundamental subject in computer science that develops the ability to organize, process, store, and retrieve data efficiently while designing effective solutions to computational problems. The systematic study of data structures and algorithms provides students with the conceptual foundation required for programming, software development, database systems, artificial intelligence, operating systems, and many other areas of computing. This book is designed to provide a structured and application-oriented understanding of both fundamental and advanced data structures and their associated algorithms.

The book begins with the basics of arrays, including their storage representation, operations, applications, polynomial representation, and sparse matrices. It introduces linear and nonlinear data structures and develops essential problem-solving skills through searching and sorting techniques. The subsequent units explore linked lists in detail, covering singly, circular, and doubly linked lists along with their practical applications. Stack and queue structures are then presented as abstract data types, with emphasis on their implementations, expression processing, and real-world applications.

The later units introduce hierarchical and network-based structures through trees and graphs, including binary search trees, AVL trees, Red-Black trees, graph representations, BFS, and DFS. The final unit focuses on heaps and hashing, highlighting efficient priority-based processing, heap sort, hash functions, and collision-resolution techniques. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on understanding concepts, operations, implementation principles, algorithmic thinking, and practical applications. The book is therefore intended to serve as a comprehensive learning resource for students, educators, and readers seeking to develop strong foundations in data structures and algorithmic problem solving.
