Preface
Organizations thrive not merely because of advanced technologies, efficient processes, or financial resources, but because of the people who bring knowledge, creativity, commitment, and purpose to the workplace. Understanding human behaviour in organizations has therefore become one of the most essential aspects of modern management. Organization Behaviour (OB) is a multidisciplinary field that integrates concepts from psychology, sociology, anthropology, management, and behavioural sciences to explain how individuals and groups think, feel, interact, and perform within organizational settings. As organizations continue to evolve in response to globalization, digital transformation, cultural diversity, hybrid work environments, and rapid technological advancements, the ability to understand and effectively manage human behaviour has become a critical competency for managers, leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and professionals.
This book, Organization Behaviour, has been carefully designed to provide students, faculty members, management professionals, and competitive examination aspirants with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts, theories, and practical applications of Organization Behaviour. The content is presented in a systematic and learner-friendly manner, balancing theoretical foundations with contemporary organizational practices and real-world case studies that encourage critical thinking and practical problem-solving. The book begins with the Fundamentals of Organization Behaviour, introducing readers to its definition, scope, importance, historical evolution, and major behavioural models, including the Autocratic, Custodial, Supportive, Collegial, and System models. It further explores personality and individual differences through widely accepted frameworks such as the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Big Five Personality Model, and the Johari Window, helping readers appreciate how personality influences workplace performance and organizational effectiveness. Subsequent chapters examine the role of Perception in shaping employee attitudes, judgments, and decision-making. Readers gain insight into perceptual processes, factors influencing perception, and common perceptual biases such as stereotyping and the halo effect. The section on Motivation presents both classical and contemporary motivational theories, including Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory, Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, the Porter–Lawler Model, and Equity Theory, enabling readers to understand the diverse factors that drive employee performance and organizational commitment.
A distinctive feature of this book is the integration of carefully selected case studies throughout every unit, allowing readers to connect theoretical concepts with real organizational situations. These practical illustrations strengthen analytical skills, improve managerial decision-making, and prepare learners to address behavioural challenges encountered in modern organizations. It is our sincere hope that this book serves as a valuable academic resource and a practical guide for understanding the complexities of human behaviour in organizations. By combining foundational theories with contemporary perspectives and practical applications, Organizational Behaviour aims to develop competent, ethical, emotionally intelligent, and effective professionals who can lead organizations toward sustained excellence in an increasingly dynamic and competitive world.
