Preface
Assessment and evaluation are important parts of education. A teacher does not only teach lessons, but also tries to understand how far students have learned, where they are facing difficulty, and how their learning can be improved. For this reason, every student-teacher should have a clear understanding of assessment, evaluation, measurement and testing.
This book, Fundamentals of Assessment and Evaluation, has been prepared for future teachers and teacher education students according to the Odisha Higher Education Department, particularly for UG students. The chapters have been arranged strictly according to the syllabus so that students can study the subject in a clear and systematic manner.
The book explains the basic concepts of test, measurement, assessment and evaluation in simple language. It also discusses tools of assessment, test construction, instructional objectives, table of specifications, achievement tests, teacher-made tests, standardized tests and item analysis. These topics are useful for future teachers because they help them prepare better tests and understand student learning more clearly.
The book also explains the qualities of a good test, such as reliability, validity, objectivity and usability. It further discusses norms, interpretation of test scores, standard scores, percentile, percentile rank and grading. These topics help student-teachers understand that marks and scores should be interpreted carefully before making any judgement about students.
The final unit deals with modern trends in assessment, such as marks versus grade, semester system, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, Choice Based Credit System, observation, assignment, rubric, self-evaluation and peer-group evaluation. These topics show how assessment is becoming broader, more regular and more learner-centred.
The language of the book has been kept very simple and student-friendly. Care has been taken to explain technical terms in easy words. Classroom-based examples have been used wherever needed so that students can connect the ideas with actual teaching practice.
I hope this book will be useful for B.Ed. students, student-teachers and teacher educators. It is expected to help readers understand assessment and evaluation not only as examination-related topics, but also as important parts of good teaching and learning.
