Preface
The present textbook General English – I is designed as a holistic language course for first-year undergraduate students of all branches. This textbook brings together a rich variety of literary texts, contemporary essays, poems, and practical language activities, aiming to nurture both proficiency in English and deeper values such as empathy, critical thinking, and cultural awareness.
The book is structured into five units, each focusing on a different aspect of language and literature. The first three units introduce students to a world of poetry, prose, and short stories—from the reflective beauty of Wordsworth’s “Daffodils” and the symbolism of Sarojini Naidu’s “Indian Weavers” to the wit of R.K. Narayan, the inspiration of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and the courage of Yuvraj Singh. Classic stories and essays are paired with modern voices to offer a balance between tradition and contemporary relevance.
A central focus of this book is the integration of the four foundational language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW). Each unit includes not only literary appreciation, but also a wide range of worksheet exercises that reinforce grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills. Special attention is given to everyday English usage, including letter writing (formal and informal), descriptive writing, sentence types, and practical grammar (parts of speech, articles, prepositions, conjunctions, etc.).
The “Comprehension” and “LSRW Skills” sections are designed to help students become effective, confident communicators—both in academic and real-world settings. Model passages, practice questions, and writing prompts encourage learners to think independently and express themselves with clarity.
This textbook is the result of collaborative effort, thoughtful curation, and a student-centered approach. It strives to be inclusive, approachable, and relevant for learners from diverse academic backgrounds. Our hope is that General English – I will serve not only as a guide to mastering English, but also as a window to understanding human experience, values, and the world at large.
We invite feedback from teachers and students to further refine and enrich future editions.
