Preface
Education is not complete when a student only learns lessons from textbooks. A school has a wider responsibility. It must help students understand themselves, face difficulties, make suitable choices, build confidence and prepare for life beyond the classroom. In this sense, guidance and counselling are not extra activities in a school. They are essential parts of meaningful education.
Today’s students live in a world of many opportunities, but also many pressures. They face academic competition, examination stress, career confusion, peer influence, emotional challenges and changing family and social expectations. Many students are capable, but they need proper direction. Some students are sincere, but they do not know how to study effectively. Some are talented, but they lack confidence. Some remain silent even when they need help. A sensitive school should be able to notice these needs and respond to them with care.
This book, Dynamics of School Guidance and Counselling, has been prepared for B.Ed, M.Ed and M.A. Education students. It aims to explain the basic ideas of guidance and counselling in a simple, clear and practical manner. The language has been kept easy so that student-teachers can understand the subject without difficulty and use it meaningfully in their future teaching practice.
The book is written with special attention to the Indian school context. It discusses the concept, need, importance and principles of guidance, the types of guidance, guidance services, organization of school guidance programmes and the common issues faced in schools. It also explains the meaning, principles, purposes, types and process of counselling, along with the qualities and role of a school counsellor. The final unit deals with important tools and techniques that help teachers and counsellors understand and support students better.
The purpose of this book is not only to help students prepare for examinations. Its deeper purpose is to help future teachers develop a guidance-oriented attitude. A good teacher should not see students only through marks, discipline or classroom performance. He should try to understand their background, interests, difficulties, emotions and possibilities. When teachers guide with patience and counsel with sensitivity, the school becomes a place of support, not fear.
I hope this book will be useful for student-teachers, teacher educators, school teachers and all those who wish to make schools more caring, inclusive and learner-centred. If this book helps even a few teachers understand their students more deeply and guide them more responsibly, its purpose will be fulfilled.
